My Country
The Artists of Ampilatwatja are a collective established in 1999 in Ampilatwatja, a community appx. 325 km northeast of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in the Northern Territory of Australia. This community is situated on Aherrenge country, the land of the Alyawarre people. Renowned for their distinctive approach to landscape painting, the artists depict the beauty and vitality of their country in a representational form. Their paintings are characterised by vibrant colours and intricate details, capturing the flora and fauna of the desert. In 2023, Christina Grätz had the opportunity to meet the elder of the Indjalandji-Dhidhanu, Colin Saltmere, and presented him with a decorated Sorbian Easter egg as a guest gift. In return, Colin gifted Christina this picture as a token of his appreciation. Inspired by the beauty of this work, she developed her wax-embossing watercolor painting.
